Kristine decelerates after landfall, another LPA nears PH

Severe tropical storm Kristine has gradually decelerated after making landfall in Divilacan, Isabela Thursday even as it moves northwestward over Northern Luzon, weather bureau PAGASA said. 

‘Kristine’ makes landfall in Isabela: PAGASA as of 4 a.m., Kristine’s center was estimated based on all available data in the vicinity of Tumauini, Isabela. Packing 95 kph winds near the center and gusts of up to 160 kph, Kristine is moving west northwestward at 15 kph.

PAGASA weather forecaster Benison Estareja said Kristine is expected to cross Northern Luzon today and may emerge over the waters west of Ilocos Region Thursday afternoon or evening.“Base sa latest satellite animation, ito na ‘yung peak na magkakaroon tayo ng malakas na hangin at malakas na ulan na siyang direktang epekto ng bagyong Kristine lalo na są Northern at Central Luzon,” he said.It will then move west northwestward over the West Philippine Sea and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday  afternoon. Meanwhile, another low pressure area has been spotted outside the Philippine area of responsibility and has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression in the next 24 hours.Estareja said the brewing storm may enter PAR early next week.

PAGASA said there is a moderate to high risk of life-threatening storm surge up to 3.0 m above normal tide levels in the next 48 hours over the low-lying or exposed coastal localities of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Zambales, and Quezon.

MANILA (2nd UPDATE) — Classes in all levels and work in government offices in Luzon are suspended on Thursday, October 24, due to the inclement weather brought by severe tropical storm Kristine, Malacañang announced Wednesday.

According to the post by the Office of the Executive Secretary, suspension of work for private companies and offices is left to the discretion of their respective heads.Agencies whose function involve delivery of basic and health services, as well as disaster response and preparedness, shall continue with their operations.

The suspension earlier only covered Bicol region, but was later expanded to the whole of Luzon.The House of Representatives has also suspended work on Thursday, October 24, according to an advisory from its secretary-general. According to Reginald Velasco, only essential personnel “as determined by their respective Deputy Secretaries General or the Sergeant-at-Arms shall render service.”At least 7 people were killed, and thousands were forced to evacuate, due to Kristine. In its 8 p.m. advisory Wednesday, PAGASA said the center of the storm was last seen 150 km east of Echague, Isabela, packing maximum sustained winds of up to 95 kilometers per hour, with gusts of up to 115 kph. Signal No. 3 is currently hoisted over Cagayan Valley region, Cordillera Administrative Region and parts of northern Luzon, while Signal No. 2 is raised over Metro Manila, central Luzon, southern Tagalog region, parts of northern Luzon and parts of Bicol region. Kristine may make landfall over Isabela between Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. It is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Friday.

Bahagyang bumilis ng kilos si Kristine sa karagatan ng Aurora habang nanantili ang lakas nito.Bandang 10 a.m. ay makikita si Kristine 200 km bandang silangan ng Casiguran, Aurora na may dalang hangin na 85 kph at bugso na 105 kph.

Tinatantyang mag-landfall ito sa Isabela Miyerkoles na gabi na isang tropical storm.Matinding buhos ng ulan ang inaasahang babagsak sa Northern Luzon, Aurora, Quezon, at Bicol Region.Malawakang pagbaha at landslides ang inaasahan sa maraming lugar.
